Medical School Personal Statement & Application Essay Services Shepherd School of Music ApplicantsApplicants interested in Shepherd School of Music must submit additional materials depending on their area of study. All application materials must be completed by December 1. Music applicants are not eligible to apply through QuestBridge or Early Decision. Admitted students must pursue the music program for at least one year before changing schools. Use your Microsoft Word or Google Docs toolbar to check word count. Do not include your name unless you are requested to do so. Most online applications are formatted to limit the font options. When creating your college application essay, avoid using fancy fonts. Stick to basic fonts, like Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri in 12-point type. As is consistent with our holistic review, students will be given full consideration with the information they have provided regardless of their decision to submit their test scores. Early Decision is a binding decision plan designed for students who have selected Rice as their first choice. Students may initiate applications to other colleges under nonbinding plans but must withdraw those applications if admitted to Rice. Students who apply Early Decision must submit their materials by November 1. Admission decisions will be released by mid-December. Resist the temptation to write it directly into the online application box. You can upload your document or copy and paste it into the online box when it is completed. Once you feel you have done your best work, let someone you trust read your essay and give their feedback. Online applications may also not accept formatting like bold or italics. Avoid using emojis, hashtags, underlines and ALL CAPS in your writing. Write your college application essay on your own computer in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Don’t go at this journey alone, especially in the editing process, and always ask for help. The overall workload here is really dependent on your college list, so if your list isn’t as ambitious, some of the timelines above might not apply to you. The main point here is that getting a head start and planning your essay workload is essential to limiting how stressful the college application process needs to be. Make sure to get these done early so that you give yourself a lot of time to work on the remaining regular decision supplemental essays. Edit thoroughly and ask for feedback.While it can be excruciating, it’s extremely important to edit your essay to make sure it’s in tip-top shape. Take a day-long break after your initial edit, then read it again with fresh eyes, out loud, to spot any spelling and grammar errors you may have missed. Some may ask for your application ID number to be displayed on the cover page, others may ask for pages to be numbered, with a heading on each page. Stories of success, overcoming obstacles, and leadership can help create a college application essay that stands apart. Use these as supporting material or evidence to back up your main point. It may be tempting to use a standard college application essay template because it sounds easy. Write the college application essay so that the story shows your creative side, while being true to who you are. Ask them to read for flow, content and readability, with a lookout for grammar, punctuation or spelling errors. A fresh eye can give perspective and constructive feedback to make your college application essay even better. Let your essay tell specific examples or analogies from your life experiences. Point out important events from your life that have made you who you are today.
